What is FTP?
In the last few posts I have discussed he first couple of things that you need for your website. You need a domain name and you need a server(hosting) to store the files that you need for your website. The next thing you need to know how to do is …
FTP.
What is FTP?
FTP stands for file transfer protocol.
This is the way that you transfer the files that you need for your website from your computer to your server so that your website can be displayed when someone types your URL into their internet browser program (eg Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari).
The process of FTP is done using a special software program. These programs are called FTP programs or FTP software. If you type “FTP program” into the Google search box you will find over 9 million results so let me help you narrow it down a little. An FTP program must be easy to set up and easy to use. If it is inexpensive or free then that is an added bonus!
The program that I have found which is the best free FTP sofware is called Filezilla. When you go to Filezilla you will see a couple of options:

Just click on the circled option to download the filezilla client version. There is a suitable version for all of the different operating systems. I’m not exactly sure what the filezilla server program is but I know you don’t need it at this stage. After you have clicked on the download filezilla client button chose the version you want to download and install the program onto your computer. (I am presuming that you know how to install a new program onto your computer, if you don’t leave me a comment and I’ll make you a video taking you through all fo the different steps involved.) Depending which computer operating system you are using you may be asked a few times to confirm the download and whether you trust the source. This is a commonly used program by a reputable software company!
FTP Software Download is Complete – What Next?
Once you have Filezilla installed onto your computer when you open the program you will see this

On the image you can see “local site”. This window displays the files nad directoires on your computer. The window labelled “remote site” displays the files on your server. In this image there are no files and folders displayed because I have not yet connected to my server.
To connect to the server you need some details that will be in the welcome email that you received from your web hosting service when you purchased web hosting. you need to know your host, your username and your password. It may seem a little confusing just reading about it but it really is quite simple once you do it. The port is always 21.
Once you are connected to your server it is a simple matter of highlighting the files you wan to upload, navigating to the desired folder on your server, right clicking on the desired files and choosing the upload files option. If you need more detailed instruction son how to use Filezilla then go to their help section which is labelled documentation. It can be found here.
If you are not which is the correct directory it is usually in the public html folder and then within the domain name that you are working with.
I know this might all seem confusing right now but I just want you to know how to do this so that once you have decided on a product to sell and you know how to construct a website (using the easy tools that I show you soon) you won’t be worried about FTP, hositng and domain names.
Other FTP Software Downloads
I started put using the Filezilla free FTP software but I have since changed to Ipswich WS_ FTP Professional because I found it faster and easier to use. The main problem that I found was if you were uploading large files using Filezilla you couldn’t navigate around your server and check other things whilst the upload was in progress. Ipswich FTP isn’t expensive and I don’t have an affilaite link for them- I just prefer the product.
The next step is the last essential you need before we get into finding a market, finding a product to promote and learning about keyword research…
