Internet Marketing Basics

There are 3 basics things that you need to know – each is a big topic in it itself but if you focus on the fact that you just have to learn 3 things then you won’t hit the overwhelm button (we could also call this the eject button)

I have already hinted at the 3 things but here they are again:

The 3 Basics of Internet Marketing

1. Traffic

2.  Database

3.  Conversion

Once you have mastered these 3 internet marketing basics you will definitely not be an internet marketing newbie.

1. Traffic

Traffic is the name given to the visitors to your website.

Imagine an advertising billboard on the roadside. The number of people driving by who see your advertisement depends on which roadside your billboard is on.

If your billboard is on a little used country road, then not many people will drive by and see your ad. But if your billboard is right on main street, then the traffic driving by is increased and many, many people will see your ad.

The billboard represents your website and to increase the number of people who visit yor website you have to put it on main street ie the first page of Google for your keyword or keyphrase.

These billboards would get good traffic!

A keyword or keyphrase is simply the word or group of words that someone looking for your information or service or product would type into the Google search box.

Two Types of Traffic: Organic Traffic and Paid Traffic

To get your website onto the front page of Google organically you need to know about keywords, keyphrases and search engine optimisation (SEO).

Paid traffic is also known as PPC.
To get your website onto the front page of Google you can also pay using Google’s Adsense service whereby when someone clicks on your ad you pay a fee to Google.

How to Get Traffic to a Website

1. Well, the first thing you need to get traffic to your website is a website (this is pretty obvious but there are a few steps involved and even this can slow you down for a while as an internet marketing newbie)

2. For a website you need a domain name, hosting and the actual webpage that is displayed when someone types in your domain name (URL)

You can either learn to do this yourself or you can pay someone to do it for you.

Note that there are a vast range of pricing schedules that are used for building websites anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on who you use and the quality that you want.

For me, I had to learn about this myself a little bit so that I could do the basic stuff for myself and also so that I knew what to ask the experts when I needed something more complicated done.

In later posts I will teach you exactly how to buy a domain name, setup your hosting and put up a simple webpage.

Once you have a website live on the internet (it really isn’t that hard to do once you know the right steps and you have the right tools) then you need to learn about SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and PPC.
